The Language Caf茅 is open to all students, staff and alumni.

Our next Language Caf茅 is taking place on Thursday 22 October 2026, from 13.00 to 14.00 in Polden Caf茅. Whether you鈥檙e just starting out or already confident in another language, this is a chance to practise speaking in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

How the Caf茅 works

You鈥檒l join small conversation groups led by volunteers who are fluent or native speakers. Every language has three conversation groups: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. The theme for this session is 鈥渁rriving and getting to know each other鈥, offering a gentle way to start conversations and connect with others across the University.

Taking part

You鈥檙e encouraged to take part, but there鈥檚 no pressure to speak straight away. Feel free to listen in and join when you鈥檙e ready. Free tea, coffee and snacks will be available 鈥 just remember to bring your own cup.

Booking is required, and you will be asked to indicate the language you wish to practise and your level of proficiency.

Who can join a Language Caf茅

The Language Caf茅 is open to all students, staff and alumni. It鈥檚 a great way to meet new people, explore different cultures and build confidence in using another language.

Facilitating a group

If you are a fluent or native speaker of another language and would be interested in facilitating a group at the Caf茅, we鈥檇 love to hear from you. Please email Carmen Schembri Wismayer if you鈥檇 like to find out more. You might also be interested in on working with us as a Language Cafe facilitator last year.

How to book a place

You must . We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment; the Caf茅s we ran in 2025-26 sold out.
