The Language Caf茅 is run by volunteers who are either native or fluent speakers of a huge variety of languages.
Each session, we suggest a theme to give you a starting point for conversation and to help you learn something new at every Caf茅. Every language has three conversation groups: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. Conversation groups are small so that everyone gets a chance to speak.
All members of the University community - students, staff and alumni - are very welcome to attend.
‘The Language Caf茅 is a fun, relaxed, interactive way of learning and practising languages. It welcomes all students, irrespective of proficiency in the language. It's an international social occasion where you can explore different facets of culture.’
There are three Caf茅s taking place in Academic Year 2026-27. You are welcome to join as many as you wish.
To join a Language Caf茅 this year, click the link to book your place via MySkills. All Caf茅s will run from 13:00 - 14:00 in Polden Caf茅, and all students and staff are welcome.

We met up with Paola, a second year Psychology student, to talk about her experience of being a Language Caf茅 facilitator and how it helped her prepare for her placement year.
When I first volunteered as a facilitator, I saw it as an opportunity to brush up on my German conversational skills. What I did not realise was how rewarding the role would be in terms of the employability skills I developed.

The languages offered at each Caf茅 depends on the facilitators available, and we鈥檙e always keen to hear from people who would be interested in facilitating a group.
