This role is a 1 year fixed term position supporting fabrication in the Core Research Facility of fibre fabrication as well as the microfabrication work associated with the Department of Physics. It will involve supporting students and researchers with both fabrication techniques through training and to ensure the smooth running of equipment. It will also involve engaging with external companies and other higher education institutes to enhance our research portfolio.

Fabrication is central to the research in the Department of Physics and microfabrication forms a core part of the Condensed Matter and Quantum Materials research group as well as the Nanobioelectronics research group. Fibre fabrication is part of the Core Research Facilities at the 性视界 and has a state-of-the-art optical fibre pulling tower which is central to the work of the Fibre Fabrication group in the Department of Physics. This role will both enhance and support the work of these research groups, and the post holder will have an opportunity to expand their expertise and skills.

We are looking for a person who is enthusiastic about fabrication, with practical experience in microfabrication clean room work as well as experimental optical physics. Experience in training others would be an advantage as well as working as part of an experimental team. The applicant should also have an awareness of the Health and Safety considerations of working in both fabrication environments. Strong communication skills are essential as is an aptitude for problem solving.

The Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering requires a highly skilled, adaptable, and self-motivated skilled engineer to provide technical support to the departmental Mechanical Services workshop.

The successful applicant should have demonstrable experience in machining and manufacturing parts using a variety of conventional and CNC machine tools. In addition, the post holder will provide expert technical support to staff and students across the department and faculty with the specification, design and manufacture of bespoke mechanical systems, and the repair, maintenance and modification of new and existing experimental rigs and components. The Technical Specialist will bring expert mechanical systems knowledge to inform and influence effective design and manufacture of new rigs, and the adaptation of existing rigs. They will also have custodianship of laboratories and workshops containing specialist research equipment and contribute to the management of health and safety in these spaces.

Applicants should have ideally served a recognised toolroom / technician / mechanical engineering apprenticeship, possess a minimum of a City and Guilds qualification or equivalent and have substantial experience of working in an engineering machine shop or toolroom environment using both CNC and conventional machine tools and associated equipment.

Knowledge and experience of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and CNC machine tool programming would be an advantage, but training will be available if necessary to develop these skills.

As a Research Software Engineer, you’ll collaborate with researchers across all disciplines to create, improve and maintain software solutions that elevate research capabilities. You’ll be part of a dynamic team within our Core Research Facilities, working at the forefront of digital research infrastructure to support everything from AI and machine learning to high-performance computing applications.  

 

As part of our newly formed Research Software Engineering Facility, you will: 

  • Lead and contribute to complex software development projects that support academic research, primarily using HPC 
  • Collaborate with researchers to design, implement and maintain robust, efficient and reproducible software solutions  
  • Champion best practices in software engineering, including version control, testing, documentation and continuous integration 
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring and training to researchers and colleagues 
  • Engage with the wider research community and contribute to the University’s digital research strategy

We’re looking for someone with: 

  • A strong background in software development and HPC, ideally in a research or academic setting 
  • Proficient in at least two programming languages used in research (e.g. Python, C++, Fortran) 
  • Experience with programming paradigms used in HPC (e.g., MPI, GPU-programming) 
  • Experience managing or contributing to complex technical projects 
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines 
  • A committed to professional development and continuous learning 

 You’ll have a graduate degree with significant computational experience or equivalent professional software development background. With demonstrated expertise in multiple programming languages, you’ll bring knowledge of agile methodologies, version control and software engineering best practices. 

Essential to your success will be excellent communication skills with a range of stakeholders, and the ability to rapidly acquire new programming languages and technologies. You’ll have experience leading complete technical projects and mentoring other programmers, with a commitment to promoting good software development practice across research communities.
